S3NN - Why the THREE in the middle of the name?
Three is a very powerful number in the history of numbers, we will illustrate how it relates to your teeth here.
When we eat our mouth becomes acidic. That lasts for up to 30 minutes. If we eat the wrong food, it causes our natural cleansing system to reverse its flow. We are not only pulling in harmful cariogenic molecules and bacteria, but acid as well. It is really important to understand how to keep that flow moving in the correct direction for our tooth health.
The triad to tooth health:
- Dentinal fluid transport system: The pump inside our tooth. In a healthy tooth, this system pumps dentinal fluid from the inner pulp out towards our enamel. This is our tooth's natural cleansing mechanism.
-
Stephan Curve - The pH scale is simply a measure of how acidic an environment is, and 7 is the neutral point. The Stephan curve says that when the pH drops below 5.5, your teeth will begin to demineralize/dissolve. It takes about 30 minutes for your saliva to get out of the danger zone where your teeth are susceptible to demineralization.
- Acid - The response of dental plaque to sugars is acid production. This acid is what drives the caries (cavity) process. The plaque becomes most acidic 5-10 minutes after eating/drinking sugars, followed by a gradual recovery to its starting value, usually in 30 minutes.
Understanding this crucial triad is essential to maintaining your teeth's vitality.
